The action fronts had in fact demonstrated twice in the week before 1 October in protest against the rising price of rice and the corruption of the government purchasing agency which they alleged was responsible for it. Yet there appears ti have been only one attempt (in solo) to mobilize dissatisfaction over the rive issue against the Chinese, and this was abortive. When demonstrations over price of rice resumed in Jakarta in early November, Suharto answered the complaints of the students by lecturing them on the problems of supplying rice and blaming the Chinese community for economic manipulation, but even this failed to ignite further anti-Chinese actions.
