Images produced by X-ray, Cat scans and magnetic resonance imagery (MRI) equipment are often used to look for symptoms of disease inside a patients body. However, it is very difficult to visually detect unhealthy regions of the brain in an MRI image, because of the nature of brain tissue. Unhealthy regions of the brain can be made more distinguishable by mapping image texture into sounds that can be heard by selecting a region of interest with a mouse (Martins et al. 1996). Listening to the data may help a doctor to diagnose a dangerous illness which might otherwise go undetected.
