First-wave ska was a Jamaican response to American jazz and R&B. The second wave spread the musical class to other countries, most notably into the British music scene where it exploded in popularity. Second wave “two-tone” ska featured larger bands, often with nine or more musicians, mixing horn sounds with a new punk rock feel. Ska moved from the slums and crime-riddled areas of Jamaica across many class boundaries internationally (Porter).
